In June of this year Hewlett Packard were involved in the simultaneous raids of premises in both Hungary and the US.
Hewlett Packard had been receiving customer complaints both from Budapest and Los Angeles since 1996. It became apparent that refilled cartridges were being sold as new HP products. Through an investigation instigated in the US, it was established that there had been a significant export-import traffic between the US distributor of the fraudulent toners and a Hungarian company and further, that the executives of the two companies were relatives.
As a consequence, the Hungarian National Police's investigation led to the seizure of several hundred refilled cartridges all of which were housed in 'HP packaging'. A US raid was conducted simultaneously resulting in the seizure of more fraudulent toners.
HP are now pursuing civil actions in Hungary and the US.
Toni Berria, part of the Laserjet Supplies Operation at Hewlett Packard, said, "HP is committed to protecting our reputation for quality and reliability and the confidence our customers have in our products. It is important that customers are able to trust that they will receive the value they expect and can make a "safe buy" from our distribution channel".
